As self-employed it is good to understand what must be covered by your invoice when you invoice your salary as a private person instead of being employed. With Pay2me's salary calculator for freelancers, self-employed and consultants you can do a detailed salary calculation on invoice amount so you see that you get the salary you should have.

Invoice amount excluding VAT

VAT is always added to your invoiced amount, but it is no cost for a company as it is a consumption tax – a company deducts its input VAT against output VAT. There are also different VAT rates depending on the type of service you perform, the most common is 25%. If you invoice private individuals the VAT becomes a cost as a private person and consumer must pay the VAT amount too.

Social fees and admin fee

When you then get paid we as employer will need to report employment fees before gross salary is calculated. Social fees in Sweden are for most people 31.42% (there are some discounts for young people and pensioners. If you fall under the exceptions your salary through Pay2me will be higher than in the calculator). There is also an administrative fee for Pay2me's service that varies between 1.95% and 5.95% depending on the size of the invoice amount.

1.95% amount > 100,000 SEK

3.95% amount > 35,000 SEK

5.95% amount < 35,000 SEK

Gross salary and preliminary tax for self-employed

After we have reported the social fees and the administrative fee we have calculated your gross salary – that is the amount you as a regular employee know from your employment contract and salary agreement with your employer. As an umbrella company we must, like all companies, deduct your preliminary income tax before we pay out your net salary. For umbrella companies the basic rule is that we report 30% preliminary tax of your gross salary. You can increase the preliminary tax amount if you want to pay more in (if you expect to have a very high salary). You can also submit a tax adjustment decision if you want us to deduct a lower preliminary tax. You get tax adjustment decisions from the Swedish Tax Agency.

Holiday pay for self-employed

When you calculate your salary you should also consider that you as a self-employed freelancer, unlike with a regular permanent employment, do not get paid holiday (you will not be able to invoice when you are off, unless you agree such an arrangement with your client). As self-employed you should therefore add 12% (which is the common holiday pay supplement) when calculating what salary you need to invoice. If you want a hourly rate of for example 100 kronor you should ensure that you get 112 kronor in gross salary in the salary calculator.
